GOD OF WONDERS – Creation Of Man

On January 14th, we started our first message from our GOD OF WONDERS series called ‘Creation Of Man’.  Here is what we talked about……

When I was in Jr. High School (many years ago), for part of the year we had to take ‘Wood Shop’.  That’s a class where you use large saws and other machinery to build things out of wood.  We were allowed to pick our own project so I decided to build a toy Robot completely out of wood.  So as I started preparing, getting my wood ready, tracing out where I would cut, I was very excited to see the final product.  Once the pieces were all cut out, I needed to sand them.  I remember chipping the head of the robot, so a big sliver of wood fell off.  As I went on, I made a few more mistakes.  I handed in my robot once it was finished, and to be honest, I got a very bad mark on it because of all the imperfections I made on it.  However, in my eyes, it was awesome.  I was so proud of myself and I thought I made the best robot anyone possibly could.

Let’s take a look in Genesis 2 when God was doing some creatin’….

Adam and Eve

5-7 At the time God made Earth and Heaven, before any grasses or shrubs had sprouted from the ground—God hadn’t yet sent rain on Earth, nor was there anyone around to work the ground (the whole Earth was watered by underground springs) God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive—a living soul!

18-20 God said, “It’s not good for the Man to be alone; I’ll make him a helper, a companion.” So God formed from the dirt of the ground all the animals of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the Man to see what he would name them. Whatever the Man called each living creature, that was its name. The Man named the cattle, named the birds of the air, named the wild animals; but he didn’t find a suitable companion.

21-22 God put the Man into a deep sleep. As he slept he removed one of his ribs and replaced it with flesh. God then used the rib that he had taken from the Man to make Woman and presented her to the Man.

This sounds like God breathed into Man and the *POOF*..all was done.  But God already knew how the human body would form.

I thought it would be fun to share a few cool facts about our bodies, showing how much care and design God used when he created us.

Amazing Facts About The Human Body:

  • There are 54 bones in your hands including the wrists.
  • Humans are born with 300 bones in their body, however when a person reaches adulthood they only have 206 bones.  This occurs because many of them join together to make a single bone.
  • Your thigh bone is stronger than concrete.
  • The small intestine in the human body is about 2 inches around, and 22 feet long.
  • The human body makes anywhere from 1 to 3 pints of saliva every 24 hours.
  • The width of your armspan stretched out is the length of your whole body.
  • The human heart beast roughly 35 million times a year.
  • The human heart weighs less than a pound.
  • The human heart can create enough pressure that it could squirt blood at a distance of thirty feet.
  • The slowest growing finger nail is on the thumb nail and the fastest growing is the finger nail on the middle finger.
  • The human liver performs over 500 functions.
  • Your brain is 80% water.
  • Your brain is move active and thinks more at night than during the day.
  • The average human head weighs about eight pounds.
  • The average human scalp has 100,000 hairs.
  • Your thumb is the same length of your nose.

The Human body is full of organs/muscles/bones/ and lots of blood.  However, all of these things use one another to operate the body.  You take one or more of these things away and the Human body will not easily survive.  God knew this when he made us.

Going back to my Robot story, no matter what happens in your life, or what mistakes you’ve made (or probably will make in the future), God loves you so much.  You are SO valuable to Him.  Your life has value.  We need to remember that God created Man and Woman for a purpose.

So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27

I hope this made you think a little…

A Gift To Bring

I know this is a little late, but here is the message from our December series, ‘A Gift To Bring’:

What is the BEST gift you have ever been given?  (Birthday or Christmas)

What does it mean when someone gives you a present?

2 weeks from tomorrow, millions of people around the world will be celebrating a holiday called Christmas.  But, we won’t all be celebrating it the same way.  Many religions and cultures celebrate this holiday in a different manner.

The most popular icon in the world right now for Christmas is _________? (Santa).

A man that travels the world in ONE night, and gives all the GOOD girls and boys exactly what they wanted for Christmas.  ALL IN ONE NIGHT.  I stopped believing in Santa, when I caught my mom putting out my gifts on Christmas Day, early in the morning :)

Now, for Christians, we understand the true meaning of Christmas.  On December 25th, we celebrate a GIFT that was given to this world.  A baby.

READ LUKE 2:1-20

What I like best about this scripture is where it says that you will find a baby ‘wrapped’ in cloths and lying in a manger.  Wow!  Did you get that?  God gift-wrapped His son for us, so that we can experience Jesus for the rest of our lives.

READ MATT 2:1-12

Let’s look at these ‘Magi’ for a second…

‘Magi’ actually means ‘Wise Men’ or‘King’.  These men were considered Kings, a very high honour.  Now, when the magi saw Jesus, they bowed and worshipped him.  In those days, bowing and worshipping was only for Kings.  It was not something that was done for anyone.  These men knew the importance of this baby.  Now with them, they brought 3 gifts.

Why do we as Christians, give presents at Christmas?

What were the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus?

Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh

Let’s examine these 3 gifts, shall we?

  1. All three gifts are ordinary offerings and gifts given to a KING.  Myrrh being commonly used as an anointing oil, frankincense as a perfume, and gold as a valuable.
  2. The three gifts had a spiritual meaning:  gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense as a symbol of priestship, and myrrh as a symbol of suffering.

Jesus was given gifts that were fit for a King.  That’s because He is one.

With this in mind, what gift are you bringing Him this Christmas?

God gave us His own son to grow up on earth and to eventually suffer and die for all of our sins.  Yours and mine.  The least we can do is give something back to Him.

It says in the bible that we must confess with our lips and believe in our hearts that He is Lord and we are saved.  However, it also says that faith without deeds is dead.  We can have faith, but without doing something with it, it’s useless.

Your gift to Jesus is to live FOR Him.  To be an imitator of Christ.  To tell others about Him, with actions and words.

I hope you had an awesome Christmas.

Blessings.

WHOM SHALL I FEAR?

This past Friday we split the guys and girls into 2 separate groups.  And this is what we discussed:
Last week we talked about two specific types of fear. The first type is a characteristic that is not of the Lord and should be overcome. The second type is beneficial and is to be encouraged. It is called the ‘FEAR OF THE LORD‘. This type of fear does not necessarily mean to be afraid of something. Rather, it is a reverential awe of God; a reverence for His power and glory. It is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, the fear of the Lord is a total acknowledgement of all that God is, which comes through knowing Him and His attributes.

WHY SHOULD WE FEAR GOD?

It is by HIS love and grace that we even exist. He is master over all and wants the absolute best for His children. How can we truly follow God, if we can’t fully give Him our trust and our lives?

WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF SOMEONE DECIDES TO LIVE WITH NO FEAR OF GOD?
People believe that God doesn’t care or doesn’t see.
People will mock, curse, and deny God. Revelation 16:11

People act like nobody knows or records the things they’ve done wrong. 1 Cor. 4:5

People will let themselves be changed by the world’s views.

Without a Fear of God, people don’t believe (or have Faith). Romans 3:10-18*

**READ PSALM 3***
(David Feared the Lord – He trusted Him with his life)

HOW WOULD THE FEAR OF THE LORD CHANGE SOMEONE’S LIFE?

*The rest of your life will be built upon the foundation of God’s truth that will make life worth living. (1 Tim. 4:1) Don’t live your life based on lies or on what people who don’t know the truth tell you.

*The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. When you read His word and learn who God is, what He can do and what He knows…you will receive wisdom that will change your life forever.

*When you Fear the Lord, you lose fears in other areas of your life. You have accepted who He is: creator, Father in heaven. You also will understand that if you belong to God:

- Death will NOT defeat you.

- Sin does not control you.

- Hell loses you.

HOW DO YOU DEVELOP A ‘FEAR OF THE LORD’?

Psalm 34:11-16

Don’t be scared of things, instead FEAR the Lord and reap all that is good.

Blessings,

Matt

The Obsession With Fear

For October we are talking about ‘FEAR’.  This is what we talked about this past Friday:

What is ‘FEAR’?  It is being afraid or scared of something.  People are often afraid of a specific thing, which is called a ‘Phobia’.  Some examples of phobias that people have are heights, insects, the dark, etc.  Then there is the type of fear when you get scared by a specific situation or event.  Either way, we allow ourselves to fall into the hands of fear in our minds.  But when we allow fear to run our minds, we are falling into an ‘obsession’ with fear.  Here are the 2 ways we become obsessed with Fear.

ENJOYING SCARY

Many people thrive on being scared, it is a rush to them. Everything from movies, Haunted Houses, to Halloween, people spend big money to get a thrill out of being scared.  The ‘Horror’ industry is very big, but is very evil and wrong. What many people don’t realize is that a large number of the movies made are inspired or based on real events.

But, in a deeper sense, the enemy uses ‘FEAR’ to keep us away from God. When we are scared, we tend to live in that fear instead of giving it over to the Lord. Also, when we fill ourselves with scary movies and other things, we are giving the enemy a FOOTHOLD to our heart and mind.  Fear is NOT an attribute of God.  It is something he does NOT want us to have in our life.

BEING AFRAID

We all have something that scares us. But in your life, you will face situations where you will be scared, where fear will come into your heart and mind.  Should we be afraid?  No!!!  Look what the bible says about being afraid:

Psalm 56:3

‘When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.’

Psalm 3:1-8

O LORD, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!

Many are saying of me,
“God will not deliver him.”

But you are a shield around me, O LORD;
You bestow glory on me and lift up my head.

To the LORD I cry aloud,
And he answers me from his holy hill.

I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.

I will not fear the tens of thousands
Drawn up against me on every side.

Arise, O LORD!
Deliver me, O my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.

From the LORD comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people.

Now, David was a man who did not have fear in his heart. From a little boy, he trusted God, and was confident in God’s protection for his life.  Even with thousands of soldiers surrounding him, he was still able to lay down and fall asleep without even a hint of fear. He knew that the Lord would protect him.

The following is taken from a note in my Bible:

“As king of Israel, David had more than his share of enemies, both inside and outside his kingdom. But David left his protection in the hands of the Lord. That’s why he could sleep in the midst of fear. He knew he was no match for tens of thousands of enemies. But he knew God was more than up to the task.

How about you? Have you turned your fears over to him? Or are you still trying to fight your own battles? Are you falling victim to paranoia and fear? Place yourself in God’s protection and sleep well tonight.”

Do NOT feed into Fear.  Trust in God with whatever scares you.  Don’t let Fear run your life.  Instead, let the Lord guide you and protect you.

This week coming, ‘Whom Shall I Fear?’.

Who R U In Christ?

This past Friday, we had our first message together. And this is what we talked about:

Who are you? This a question that you would probably answer by saying your name. Why? Because that is the IDENTITY that was given to you by your parents. Everyone has an identity. Some people are known by their career, their talent(s), the way they dress, and/or their celebrity status.
If you’re a Superhero, then you should probably have 2 identities.
Now unfortunately, many people go through life not knowing who they truly are. They make many bad choices along the way while trying to either fit in somewhere or trying to find happiness.
But here’s the GOOD news. As Christians, we have an IDENTITY through what Christ has done for us on the cross. Here are just a few qualities that make up our true IDENTITY:

We are children of God. (John 1:12)

We have been forgiven of our sins.
(Col 1:12-24)

We are a new creation. (2Cor 5:17)

We have been saved by grace.
(Eph 2:8)

We are righteous and holy.
(Eph 4:24)

We are the light of the world. *WOW*
(Matt 5:14)

We are more than conquerors.
(Rom 8:37)

The Bible is full of so many more amazing qualities that make up our identity. Just look up ‘Identity’ in the back of your bible for a list of more scriptures.

Now, Daniel was a man who KNEW his identity in the Lord. He was a servant of God, and he trusted in Him with all of his heart. Go and read Daniel 6. Now look at what it says in verse 4.
“The administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.” Wow. Daniel was a man who prayed to God 3 times a day. He knew that God had his back. And as we read further, when he was thrown into a den of hungry lions, the Lord sent an angel to close the mouths of the lions. And Daniel was unharmed.

When we trust God, and walk in our Identity, when we accept all that He has done for us, then we are really walking the way that He wants us to.

Stay with me here…I’m almost done. So 3 ways to stay true in your IDENTITY:
1. Read your Bible. Get to know His words.
2. Walk with the word. Do what it says.
3. Have faith in what God can do.

Check this verse out. It sums up everything:
‘Therefore be imitators of God (copy Him and follow His example), as well-beloved children (imitate their father).’
Ephesians 5:1

So, do movie stars, athletes, scientists, doctors stop practicing what they do because they are already known by it? No!!! They still work on their identity all of the time.
The same goes for us as Christians. We keep our IDENTITY in Christ by following His example.
Hope this made sense.
Have an awesome week.

Matt

The Outdoor Type

So, it’s Friday night up here at Balsalm Lake for Jr. High camp. Now, I’m not the outdoor type….at all. But, I will say, to sit out by the fire underneath the millions of stars is mind-blowing. God created a masterpiece for us to live on, a depiction of His true beauty and the love He has for us.
On a lighter note, I heard a bear last night, and no one believes me (except Danon).
Well, Let’s remember to cherish what the Lord has given us.
